Throughout the New Testament the word "pastor" and "elder" are used interchangeably. Thus, we refer to all of our elders as "pastor" because that indeed is what they are. Our vision and primary commitment is to the covenant members of Church at Bergen, for that is who these men* will give an account before God one day. * We hold to the view popularly known as "Complementarianism." We believe the Bible clearly teaches that men have been called by God to be humble, sacrificial leaders in the church and in the home (Ephesians 5:22-33; Colossians 3:18-19; 1 Timothy 3:2; Titus 1:6; 1 Timothy 2:12-14). Thus, we teach and practice the conviction that the role of elder/pastor is reserved for men who fit the qualifications found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. This in no way means that women are in any way intrinsically, morally, or spiritually inferior to men, for they too are equal image-bearers of the Triune God and co-heirs with men of the future kingdom of God. Thus, women are necessaary co-laborers with men in the church and gospel-ministry.
